The Ill.selection neo-downtempo mixtape

This tape is a collection of third-stream soulful instrumentals and vocal tracks for a new school audience. These beats are drenched in Sun-Ra/Mothership Connection Black cosmic vibes, golden-era Hip Hop approaches, and 80’s R&B. For this mix, I drew tracks that are throwbacks to synthesizer driven funk, 80’s electronic samples, atmospherics, and crunchy R&B handclaps. If this were a club, it’d be “grown and sexy meets outer space”, atmosphere music with soul.

Work in Progress: "Just Can't Stop"

So, Imma try something new where I roll out snippets of tracks here and there I'm working on. This will keep me busy, give the blog some love, and get good feedback from any of my invisible readers... to improve my work.

Just Cant Stop (sample) - Ill.selection

First up is "Just Can't Stop". Its a bit of a 2-step swingbeat with some classic style pianos and stabs, using a vocal sample I downloaded for free. I like the fact i use two basslines to vary it up, with some 80's synth line towards the end. Let me know what you think, if there are elements missing, too boring, and what not...

An ABSOLUTE stone cold classic... for the same reasons everyone else have given you...

1. Godfather of the 2 step choppy swing of kicks and hats
2. The cut up samples garbled together in a beautiful rhythm
3. The Christian themes that allude to the earlier notions of "House" as escape as salvation as 'a feeling', a 'soul thing'.
