Music and chat with Journalist and "Resistencia" creator, Jesse Freeston on "The AmericanPupusa Show" Thursday, April 4, 5pm on Radio CPR 97.5

Tune to Radio CPR, 97.5fm, or catch on USTREAM this Thursday at 5pm!!!

This week will feature our first guest to the AmericanPupusa Show! Documentary filmmaker Jesse Freeston will stop by to share stories, talk about his work, and give us his "Top 5 Selected" (I'm sure there will be more than 5) of songs and tunes picked up along his travels!

Jesse has been a key historian of the forgotten voices and change agents in Latin America! He has covered events such as the coup in Honduras, the G-20 summit and the exploitative ways of the Pacific Rim Mining Company in El Salvador. His has also completed the documentary "Resistencia" about the farmer-led land occupation movement in Honduras. More of his work can be found here.

Send questions or comments to hnajera@gmail.com, @juicenajera, or text our station number (TBA).

A call for artists - for the new "AmericanPupusa" show on Radio CPR!!!!

Later this month, the mighty Radio CPR will present The AmericanPupusa show, hosted by Hugo Najera aka “Selecta.” The weekly show will feature the latest riddims and beats in Tropical and Global Bass; a hybrid of classic riddims, samples, technology, and current dance culture outside of the Western margins. As part of a family of musical genres rooted in Dub Soundsystem culture such as Hip Hop, Kuduro, Jungle, Tropical, House, Baile Funk, etc., each can trace their origins to the mobile sound systems of 50s and 60s Jamaica. It was in these soundsystems where music, wordplay, bass, and technology began to synergize and create a culture that strove for escapism, liberation, and celebration – achieved by manipulating music production with the echo, rewind, scratch, juggle, delay, and bass; creating fashion and language that we see with B-Boys and B-Girls; competition among chatters/MCs/toasters who lively up the crowd on day-to-day issues that speak directly to the community. It’s musical futurism for us workers, strivers, sufferers, and survivors.

A Call for Features:

A strong part of the AmericanPupusa show is creating a space for others to highlight and provoke along these same lines of futurism. One of my biggest frustrations with our cultures is how we tend to get stuck in formerly-outsider art, thinking it is still provocative, but in fact has been co-opted by society and given back to us as a Trojan horse. What hurts is how we make icons of our heroes, removing their life and spirit, and turn them into museum pieces that we can no longer touch. It is great to celebrate our past; I have all the love for Kahlo, Guevarra, Chavez, ATCQ, Basquiat, and Dondi – but where are our new code-breakers, innovative thinkers, and our new provocateurs?

The AmericanPupusa Show is calling for all artists (words, visual, sound, and performance) to submit their name/website/sample for future interviews or features on Radio CPR. Please send an email to hnajera@gmail.com, tweet @juicenajera, or inbox me on Facebook. I can include you on a list for potential artists to feature. This is open all year, so please feel free to drop a line anytime.

AmericanPupusa Soundsystem Showcase at Gala Hispanic Theatre - April 13th and 14th

I'm very honored to take part in "Occupy Gala" an artist showcase taking place in Washington D.C. April 13th and 14th. It is being put together by local hero Quique Aviles, with the idea of providing a space for provocative expression about the political and social realities from musicians, painters, writers, producers and DJs. I was asked to present my music, so here I am, putting together DJ sets, tracklists and concepts for my "AmericanPupusa Soundsystem Showcase"

My sets will present the power of soundsystem music. From Baile Funk to Hip Hop, soundsystem culture has been one of the most sacred spaces where carnality, spirituality, escapism, and reality meet. It is the space where music is chopped up, breakers defy gravity, poor people have gala dance parties, and battling and showmanship strive to entertain and relax rather than destroy.

I shall host a "Lounge" affair at early on, where I will present the latest and greatest in nu-skool Latino and Tropical Bass music, highligting the truth that we are current producers of culture. After 9pm there will be a rooftop with music curated by myself featuring 20 minute mixes of various soundsystem genres; representing commonalities and differences.

In the end, I hope to show that social commentary can be made without words. The ability for oppressed and poor folk to utilize technology in new ways, create atmosphere of dread and hope, communal participation between performers and audience, are all ways to say "fuck you." We can be depressed, but we can dance. We may have been shitted on by ignorant, racist, bastards... but fuck you... we soundclash, we battle, we windmill, we dance, we chat, we rhyme, and push your heart with our bass.
